BROKEN CITY – Seven years after being forced to resign as a New York City police officer, a private detective (Mark Wahlberg) is hired to follow the wife (Catherine Zeta-Jones) of the city’s mayor (Russell Crowe), who’s convinced she’s cheating on him, but there’s a lot more to the story in this gripping crime thriller where everyone has a motive and no one can be trusted.
DJANGO UNCHAINED – Quentin Tarantino’s reinterpretation of the spaghetti western as southern potboiler won Oscars for its screenplay and for Best Supporting Actor (Christoph Waltz). Jamie Foxx stars as Django, a slave who teams up with a bounty hunter to seek out the south’s most wanted criminals, and to find and rescue the wife (Kerry Washington) he lost to the slave trade long ago. His search ultimately leads to Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio) the infamous and brutal proprietor of a slave plantation. Vengeance and violence follows.
GANGSTER SQUAD – A great cast, Sean Penn, Nick Nolte, Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, and Emma Stone, animate this 1940′s set crime thriller. Ruthless gangster Mickey Cohen has the city of Los Angeles under his thumb, and corruption runs rampant through the police force. Chief Bill Parker takes the extreme step of forming a special unit, not to make arrests, but to exact vigilante justice. Inspired by the true story of the cops who fought for L.A.’s soul.
A HAUNTED HOUSE – The newest intallment in the comedic “Scary Movie” franchise finds a young couple (Marlon Wayans & Essence Atkins) moving into their dream home only to discover they’re not alone. Funny, silly fun!

HEMINGWAY & GELLHORN – Director Phillip Kaufman’s (The Unbearable Lightness of Being) recounting of the passionate love affair and tumultuous marriage of literary master Ernest Hemingway (Clive Owen) and the beautiful, trailblazing war correspondent Martha Gellhorn, as they serve as adventurous witnesses to history, through the Spanish Civil war and beyond.
THE GUILT TRIP – This road trip comedy stars Barbra Streisand & Seth Rogen as mother and son on an 8-day 3,000 mile journey across America. For fans of either of these stars this is certainly worth seeing, especially since Streisand rarely appears in films anymore.
HYDE PARK ON HUDSON – Bill Murray’s performance is the highlight of this charming, humorous take on our 32nd President of the United States. As Great Britain faces war with Germany, Franklin D. Roosevelt invites the King & Queen of England for a weekend at his home in upstate New York. But during this historic visit FDR must juggle his wife, mother and mistresses, while dealing with the complexities of an international crisis. Also stars Laura Linney.
SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK – Terrific performances by Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert DeNiro, and Jackie Weaver highlight this romantic dramedy about two mentally unstable people who find each other, while trying to rebuild their troubled lives. Jennifer Lawrence won the Best Actress Oscar for 2012.
THE IMPOSSIBLE – Based on the true story of one family who survived the Christmas tsunami in Thailand in 2004. Naomi Watts was nominated for a Best Actress Oscar for her devastating performance, and the recreation of the tsunami for the film is truly incredible to watch.
GAME OF THRONES (2nd Season) – The latest installment of the epic fanstasy series continues. Based on the best-selling books by George R.R. Martin, Game of Thrones is set in the fantasy continent of Westeros, where ambitious men and women of both honor and ill-repute live in a land where summers and winters can last years. Season 2 plays out against the backdrop of a fast approaching winter, the season of the white raven. If you haven’t sampled this HBO show before please check out Season 1. You won’t be disappointed.

THIS IS NOT A FILM – This clandestine documentary, shot partially on an iPhone, and smuggled out of Iran in a cake for a last minute submission to the Cannes Film Festival, depicts the day-to- day life of acclaimed director Jafar Panahi during his house arrest in his Tehran apartment. While appealing his sentence of 6 years in prison and a 20 year ban from filmmaking, Panahi is seen talking to his family and lawyer, discussing his plight with fellow director Mojtaba Mirtahmasb, and reflecting on the meaning of the art of filmmaking. This was ranked #5 in the 2012 National Film Critics poll.
RUST AND BONE – From director Jacques Audiard (A Prophet) comes this tale of two souls finding strength in each other after tragedy reunites them. Marion Cotillard gives a tour-de-force performance as Stephanie, an orca trainer whose life is transformed dramatically. Faced with unbearable circumstances, she turns to Ali (Matthias Schoenaerts), a street boxer who is having his own battle with life changing events. As their stories intersect, they navigate their relationship through a world where love and courage appear in many forms. In French with English subtitles.
KILLING THEM SOFTLY – Brad pitt delivers an explosive performance as Jackie Cogan, an enforcer for the Mob in director Andrew Dominik’s gritty yet stylish thriller. Cogan must restore order in the criminal underworld after a Mob protected card game is robbed by a group of inexperienced crooks. James Gandolfini, Ray Liotta, and Richard Jenkins round out the great supporting cast.
HITCHCOCK – Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren star in this provocative story about the making of one of cinema’s most iconic films. Plagued by both a reckless ego and nagging self-doubt, Alfred Hitchcock becomes obsessed with a grisly murder story that the Hollywood studios won’t back. THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER – One of the best films of 2012, this bittersweet coming of age tale is the feel good movie of the year. Logan Lerman plays Charlie, a High School freshman, and the eponymous “wallflower” of the title who is always watching from the sidelines until two charismatic seniors (Emma Watson & Ezra Miller) take him under their wing. Great writing, terrific performances, and a remarkable directorial debut from Stephen Chbosky, adapting his own novel, has resulted in what will be considered, in years to come, a classic of the genre. Not to be missed! Highly recommended!
LINCOLN – Daniel Day-Lewis’ Oscar winning turn as Abraham Lincoln is just one of the many highlights in Steven Spielberg’s inspiring and revealing drama focusing on the 16th president’s tumultuous final four months in office as he pursues a course of action to end the Civil War, unite the country and abolish slavery. It also won an Oscar for it’s Production Design. If you didn’t see it in the movies you really need to see it now.
THIS IS 40 – From director Judd Apatow comes this sort- of -sequel to his previous film Knocked Up. Pete (Paul Rudd) and Debbie (Leslie Mann) reprise their characters from the first film as they try to balance romance, careers, parents and children in various humorous and candid ways. Melissa McCarthy, Jason Segel, Megan Fox, and John Lithgow lend able comedic support.
THE INTOUCHABLES – France’s biggest Box Office hit of all time finally comes to dvd. When an ex-con from the projects is hired to take care of an eccentric French aristocrat his newfound job quickly becomes an unpredictable adventure. Racing a Maserati through Paris streets, seducing women and paragliding over the Alps are just the beginning as the two men turn the world of Parisian society upside down. This is a real crowd- pleaser of a film. In French with English subtitles.
THE COLLECTION – From the twisted minds of the writers of the “Saw” movies comes this riveting and macabre tale of horror. A group of friends attending an underground warehouse party find themselves caught in a nightmarish trap when a masked psychopath sets in motion a series of contraptions that kill the revelers in various ingenious and disgusting ways. For fans of the ghoulish and gory.
PARENTAL GUIDANCE – Billy Crystal and Bette Midler are old school grandparents who get more than they bargained for when they get stuck babysitting their daughter’s (Marisa Tomei) over- protected kids.
A LATE QUARTET – After 25 years together, the members of a world renowned string quartet learn that their beloved cellist (Christopher Walken) may soon be forced to retire. HOLY MOTORS – This mind-bending masterwork by French director Leos Carax (The Lovers On The Bridge, Pola X) came in at number 3 in the National Film Critics Poll for 2012. Monsieur Oscar (Denis Levant) takes a rollicking, soulful journey by limousine through the streets of Paris as he transforms into multiple characters for a series of mysterious appointments. Carax blends genres – film noir, romantic drama, musical, crime thriller, even anime – to create a fever dream of a film that is both mirthful and dazzling. Perhaps not for every moviegoers taste, but it’s an undeniably adventurous viewing experience for those willing to take the ride.
MARGARET – Anna Paquin, Mark Ruffalo, and Matt Damon star in director Kenneth Lonergan’s long awaited follow-up to “You Can Count On Me”. This story of a Manhattan teenager whose life is profoundly altered after witnessing a terrible accident, went unreleased for 4 years while the director battled the studio over his final cut of the film. It’s had an equally troubling journey to DVD, first as a Bluray only release, before finally coming out on regular DVD. It was worth the wait. Anna Paquin gives the performance of her career as an emotional teen whose ideals come into conflict with the harsh realities of the adult world. Polarizing and provocative!
THE HOBBIT: An Unexpected Journey – Peter Jackson’s epic prequel to “The Lord Of The Rings” saga follows the young Bilbo Baggins as he is swept up in the quest to reclaim the Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome Dragon Smaug. It’s through this adventure that the “precious” ring first comes into his possession and where we first meet the treacherous Gollum. Beautifully photographed with some great set pieces including the epic final battle.
RISE OF THE GUARDIANS – The Guardians of the title are Jack Frost, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, and Santa Claus together for the first time in one movie. When the evil Pitch threatens to take over the world, it’s up to these heroes to protect the hopes and dreams of children everywhere. From Dreamworks animation.
THE MASTER – Haunted by his past, a traumatized WWII veteran and drifter, Freddie Quell (Joaquin Phoenix), crosses paths with a mysterious movement called The Cause, led by Lancaster Dodd- “The Master” of the title (Phillip Seymour Hoffman)- and his wife Peggy ( Amy Adams). Their twisted relationship is at the core of this latest film by Paul Thomas Anderson (There Will Be Blood). Steeped in the psychology of fear, delusion, exploitation, and rage, with unlikeable characters and no transcendant truths this is P.T. Anderson’s most challenging film so far. It was declared the number 1 film of the year in the National Film Critics Poll, though audiences seem to either love it, or hate it.
LIFE OF PI – Winner of 4 Academy Awards including Best Director (Ang Lee), this tale of young Pi Patel stranded on a lifeboat with only one other survivor, a ferocious Bengal tiger named Richard Parker, is a remakable cinematic achievement, especially when the book it’s based on was considered unfilmable. With Oscar winning Cinematography, Music score , and Visual Effects, if you didn’t get to see this in theaters in 3-D you need to at least watch it on DVD.
MEEK’S CUTOFF – This stark and poetic drama set in 1845 follows a wagon train of three families as they try and navigate the Oregon Trail. Claiming to know a shortcut their hired guide, Stephen Meek, leads the group on an unmarked path across the high plain desert, only to become lost in the dry rock and sage brush. They are soon facing hunger, thirst, and their own lack of faith in each other’s instincts for survival. Michelle Williams stars in her second collaboration with director Kelly Reichhardt (Wendy and Lucy).

The great Belgian directors Jean-Pierre & Luc Dardenne continue their exploration of people at risk, in this case, an 11 year-old boy who has been abandoned by his single father. SEARCHING FOR SUGAR MAN – This year’s Oscar winning Best Documentary about the 1970′s Detroit singer Rodriguez, who lived in obscurity here in America, but who became, over the course of two decades, a seminal rock icon in South Africa.

ANNA KARENINA – The latest adaptation of the classic Tolstoy tale of doomed love stars Keira Knightley & Jude Law. Visually innovative direction from Joe Wright (Atonement) brings a new dimension to a familiar story. This years Oscar winner for Best Costume Design.
SINISTER – Ethan Hawke is a true crime writer who moves his family into a home where the previous occupants were brutally murdered and a child disappeared. He soon discovers a box of home movies, unwittingly setting in motion a nightmarish mystery.
HELLO I MUST BE GOING – A modern, unconventional love story told with humor and raw, emotional honesty. Melanie Lynskey plays a recently divorced woman who, demoralized and directionless, takes refuge in the suburban Connecticut home of her parents. When she meets a 19 year old actor her passion for life is reignited, starting her on the road back to independence.
THE COLD LIGHT OF DAY – The new “Superman”, Henry Cavill, stars as a man whose family is kidknapped while on vacation in Spain. In order to get his family back alive he must recover a briefcase at the center of the mystery, while tangling with corrupt intelligence agents who want him dead. Sigourney Weaver and Bruce Willis also star.
DOWNTON ABBEY (3rd Season) – All is not tranquil at the majestic English country estate in the thrilling third season of this great British series. The Great War is over and a long awaited engagement is on, but in a changing post-war landscape nothing is assured.
ARGO – Ben Affleck’s Oscar winning Best Picture based on the true story of the impossible escape of six Americans from Iran during the Iranian Revolution. It also won Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Film Editing.
THE SESSIONS – A 38 year old man paralyzed from the neck down (John Hawkes) wants to lose his virginity. Helen Hunt is the sex therapist hired to help him do that. Both give terrific performances, as does William H. Macy as a sympathetic priest.
FEMALE TROUBLE – Director John Waters’ utterly sacrilegious comedy starring the incomparable Divine as Dawn Davenport who, right out of high school, begins a criminal lifestyle that culminates in a shocking conclusion, literally!
PINK FLAMINGOS – The perverse classic that started it all! Divine stars as Babs Johnson, “The Filthiest Person Alive”. John Waters set a benchmark for the bizarre with this film that has never really been equalled in it’s unbridled offensiveness.

SILENT HILL: Revelation – Surreal sequel to the original horror hit follows the young girl (Adelaide Clemens) and her father (Sean Bean) from the first film, as they try to stay one step ahead of the malevolent forces that almost destroyed them.
THE MAN WITH THE IRON FISTS – Epic action adventure inspired by classic kung fu movies stars Russell Crowe and Lucy Lui. When the emperor’s gold is stolen, every warrior, assassin, and hired gun in China will battle to claim the missing fortune. Enjoyable mayhem!
FLIGHT – Director Robert Zemeckis’ first non-animated film since Cast Away stars Denzel Washington, in an Academy Award nominated performance, as a commercial arline pilot who, after a mid-air catastrophe, is hailed for his heroic efforts, but questions arise as to who or what was really at fault.
SKYFALL – Daniel Craig is back as James Bond in the franchises 23rd installment, and it’s biggest grossing hit. Bond’s loyalty to M (Judi Dench) is tested as her past returns to haunt her. OO7 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost. Javier Bardem is the mysterious and lethal villain Silva.

MY JOY – The fiction film debut of acclaimed documentary filmmaker Sergei Loznitsa. My Joy is a haunting, inscrutible, mysterious, moody, darkly humorous critique of post-communist Russia. Beautifully shot by master cinematographer Oleg Mutu (4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 days) it follows truck driver Georgy as he sets out on a provincial Russian highway for a routine delivery, but after a series of chance encounters his journey spirals out of control.
SEVEN PSYCHOPATHS – From director Martin McDonagh (In Bruges) comes this blood drenched black comedy about a struggling writer, an unemployed actor, a psychotic gangster, and one stolen dog. Stars Colin Farrell, Sam Rockwell, Woody Harrelson, and Christopher Walken.
THE SALT OF LIFE – In his warm and witty follow-up to Mid-August Lunch, writer-director-actor Gianni Di Gregorio has created a bittersweet comedy about a middle-aged retiree who has become invisible to all women, regardless of age or relation. Funny, poignant, and very, very Italian. In Italian with English subtitles.
END OF WATCH – A gritty, gripping cop drama stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena as police officers who find themselves on the receiving end of a violent backlash from a notorious drug cartel after a routine traffic stop.
POINT BLANK – Thrilling french thriller about a man whose pregnant wife is kidknapped by a dangerous criminal, pitting him against rival gangsters and trigger-happy police in a race to save his wife and unborn child. Director Fred Cavaye wrote the Russell Crowe film “The Next Three Days”. In French with English subtitles.
COMPLIANCE – Chilling story, inspired by true events, about a fast food manager who gets a call from a man claiming to be a police officer saying that an employee, a pretty young blonde named Becky, has stolen money from a customer. What follows is an invasive and disturbing investigation into the lengths a person will go to obey an authority figure. Terrific acting by Ann Dowd and Dreama Walker.
MY AFTERNOONS WITH MARGUERITTE – Gerard Depardieu is a nearly illiterate man in his 50′s who happens to sit beside Margueritte (Gisele Casadesus), a little old lady who is reading excerpts from her novel aloud. This chance encounter on a park bench transforms both their lives in director Jean Becker’s charming film about friendship and new beginnings.
THE POSSESSION – An antique wooden box purchased at a yard sale spells trouble for a divorced couple and their two young girls in this supernatural thriller starring Kyra Sedgwick and Jeffrey Dean Morgan.
TO ROME WITH LOVE – Woody Allen continues his tour of foreign cities with this ensemble comedy starring Alec Baldwin, Roberto Benigni, Penelope Cruz, Judy Davis, Jesse Eisenberg, Ellen Page, and of course Woody Allen.
TAKEN 2 – Liam Neeson returns as the ex-CIA operative who stopped at nothing to rescue his daughter from kidknappers in “Taken”. On vacation in Istanbul he faces off with the families of the kidknappers he so excellently dispatched in the first film.
THE PAPERBOY – A sexually and racially charged film noir from director Lee Daniels (Precious). Deep in the backwaters of 1960′s south Florida an investigative reporter and his partner chase a sensational, career-making story. Stars Matthew McConaughey, John Cusack, Zac Efron, and in a remarkably sweaty, and slutty, performance, Nicole Kidman.

COSMOPOLIS - Robert Pattinson stars in director David Cronenberg’s adaptation of the Don Delillo bestseller, thought to be unfilmable, but he did adapt a previous “unfilmable” book with “Naked Lunch” so he was definitely the right director for the job. Pattinson plays a 28 year old billionaire asset manager whose perfectly ordered world begins to implode over the course of one day.

THE FROZEN - A young couple take an ill-advised winter camping trip that takes a haunted turn in this supernatural, psychological thriller. There are some real chills here, and not just from the cold. Stars talented, up and coming actress Brit Morgan.
KILLER JOE - Matthew McConaughey is terrific as a Dallas detective who moonlights as a hitman in this twisted, redneck, trailer park thriller.
BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD - Unique, magical feature film debut from director Ben Zeitlin. 6-year old Hushpuppy lives with her tough, but loving father in an isolated bayou community that’s under siege by the melting of the ice caps. A true American art film with great performances by Quvenzhane Wallis and Dwight Henry, both “non-actors” in their first film.
